Understanding addiction & substance use
When something shifts
in your relationship with use.
You might be questioning a pattern, feeling caught between wanting change and wanting relief, or wondering where to begin.
Perhaps alcohol or other substances have become a way to unwind, feel connected, or get through difficult moments. You may also be noticing effects on your relationships, routines, or sense of choice. There is room to talk about both.
Substance use exists on a spectrum. Having questions about your use does not automatically mean you have a substance use disorder. Support can begin with understanding your experience, whether you are considering change or already taking steps.
You do not need to reach a breaking point or have a plan before starting a conversation.

Addiction & substance use FAQ
A little more clarity
before you begin.
A few answers to help you consider the next step, at your own pace.
Do I need a diagnosis to reach out?
No. You can begin with questions about your use, a pattern you want to understand, or a wish for something to feel different. A consultation is a chance to discuss your needs and whether this support is a fit.
What if I am not sure I want to stop?
You can bring that uncertainty into the conversation. We can explore your concerns, what you value, and the changes you are considering without expecting you to arrive with a decision. Your goals and the type of support you need can be discussed together.
What happens in the first session?
Your therapist will invite you to talk about what brings you in, your relationship with substances, and what you hope might change. You can ask questions about the approach, privacy, and next steps. Together, you can consider whether therapy here fits your needs.
Can therapy work alongside other support?
Yes. Therapy can be one part of a wider support plan that may include medical care, peer support, or specialized substance use services. Your therapist can discuss how the work fits alongside the care you already receive.
Does this include detox or medical treatment?
This page describes psychotherapy, not medical detox or medication treatment. Some people need medical or withdrawal support alongside counselling. Speak with a medical professional before making sudden changes to regular substance use, especially alcohol or sedatives. If there is an immediate medical emergency, call 911.
Can I access this support virtually in Ontario?
Yes. Stoneglass offers virtual psychotherapy across Ontario. The free 15–20 minute phone consultation is a chance to discuss your needs, ask about fit and availability, and consider whether virtual therapy is appropriate for you.
