Understanding trauma & difficult experiences
The experience may be past.
The impact can still feel present.
You may notice a strong reaction to an ordinary moment and wonder why it feels so difficult to settle.
Trauma can describe the lasting impact of an overwhelming experience. It may follow a single event or experiences that happened repeatedly. Its effects can reach into how you feel about yourself, relate to others, or experience safety.
You might feel on edge, disconnected, or troubled by memories. People respond differently, and a difficult experience does not automatically mean you have PTSD.
We can begin with what is affecting you now, without asking you to compare your experience with anyone else’s.

Your voice. Your choices.
A pace we find together.
We take time to understand what you need from therapy, what feels manageable, and what you hope might change. You have a say in how the work unfolds.

Talk about what helps you feel heard, your boundaries, and any concerns about therapy. We explain what we are suggesting and make room for your questions.
Understand what gets stirred up.
Explore situations, feelings, and patterns that are difficult to navigate. Together, we can consider how past experiences relate to what happens in the present.
Build resources for everyday moments.
Explore grounding, ways to respond to overwhelm, and sources of support that fit your life. We check in about what feels useful and adjust as we go.
Consider the next step with support.
When appropriate, we can discuss ways of working with distressing memories, including whether EMDR fits your needs and readiness. There is room to revisit the plan.

Trauma & difficult experiences FAQ
A little more clarity
before you begin.
A few answers to help you consider the next step, at your own pace.
Do I need a PTSD diagnosis to seek support?
No. You can reach out because an experience is affecting your life, even if you are unsure what to call it. A consultation can help us understand what you are looking for and discuss whether our support is a fit.
Will I have to describe everything that happened?
You can begin with how you are feeling now and what you want help with. We will discuss the purpose of any work involving memories, your readiness, and your choices before proceeding. You can ask to slow down or pause.
Can we work with experiences from a long time ago?
Yes. You can bring experiences that are recent, happened years ago, or unfolded over time. The starting point can be how they affect your everyday life and what you would like your therapist to understand.
Does trauma support always involve EMDR?
No. EMDR is one approach offered at Stoneglass, and we can discuss whether it may fit your needs. We can also begin with understanding your responses, building coping resources, and exploring what helps you feel supported. The approach is discussed together.
What happens in the first session?
We make time for your questions, explain confidentiality and its limits, and talk about what brings you here. We can explore what helps you feel comfortable in sessions and agree on initial priorities. You do not need to prepare a complete account of your experiences.
Is virtual trauma therapy an option for me?
Stoneglass offers virtual psychotherapy across Ontario. During a consultation, we can discuss privacy, your surroundings, available support, and whether virtual care is appropriate for your needs. If another service would be a better fit, we can talk about next steps.
